New York Sushi and Sake lovers rejoice! Chef Seki is opening his third outpost in the Theater District this week with a gorgeous bi-level experience and we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek.
As New York City sushi lovers know, Chef Seki is simply one of the best. He is known as the celebrity chef to the celebrity chefs, including the likes of: Eric Ripert, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Gordon Ramsay, and Daniel Boulud. After one bite of his creative delights you can see why – Chef Seki is a true master.
His new location on Restaurant Row in the Theater District has all of Chef Seki’s coveted dishes and so much more. The bi-level space offers something for everyone: from drinks and light bites to traditional Japanese dining in Tatami rooms. This location is sure to be a favorite for New Yorkers and tourists alike – a perfect for place for a pre-theater dinner, or after theater light bites and drinks.
On the ground floor is Bar Seki, a modern casual space featuring nice-sized bar serving a fine selection of Sake and craft cocktails with a Japanese twist. The light wood and serene lighting give this cool, contemporary space an almost Zen-like feel. The dining room is serviced by an open kitchen and includes an inviting communal table that adds a social dining experience.
We sampled drinks expertly prepared by award-winning mixologist, Shingo Gokan and they were all unique and delicious. Our favorites included; The Ume: Hendrick’s Gin, Plum Wine, Campari, rice vinegar and sea salt, The Sakura: Junmai Sake, Umeshu, Peach, Champagne Vinegar and Sakura Brine, and The Umami: Gazpacho Vodka, Clamato, Yuzu Kosho, and Akazu Vinegar. The Bar Seki menu features tapas and Japanese small plates made for sharing, in addition to a selection of larger entrees. Some of our favorite light bites include; Beet and Tofu with Sorrel Mushroom, Miso and Soy, Octopus with Honshimeji Mushroom and Pea Shoots and Duck with Grilled Scallion and Sorrel.
The second floor, Sushi Seki, is a larger dining room, with an expansive sushi bar, Tatami rooms and larger party space. The menu will feature the sushi and sashimi Chef Seki is so well-known for.
Chef Seki was born in China where he learned the art of making crispy rice from his family. He went on to study Japanese cuisine in Tokyo and then worked in Tsukiji Fish Market – one of the largest in the world. In the early 1990’s, he moved to the US and perfected his craft working with some of the best chef’s. In 2002, He opened Sushi Seki on the Upper East Side and opened his second location in Chelsea in 2014.
