Bru Haus German Restaurant and Craft Beer Pub

| January 3, 2013

bru hausBru Haus in West Los Angeles is not exactly a German themed restaurant, but more of a beer driven restaurant for the local party crowd—one that is focused on offering a German-inspired experience. This is manifested with traditional offerings such as sausages, sauerkraut and over 25 beers brewed in Germany, Belgium and the USA.

We all like a good beer from time to time, so we decided to check out the ales on offer at this Westside pub. Open since the summer of 2011, chef /partner Charly Hwang is extremely passionate about his food as well as his beer.

I was really expecting some authentic Frauleins dressed in German outfits, but the servers are strictly American. With that said, they do a great job hustling about to bring beer and food to the tables at a rapid clip.

Some of the prime food items are Sweet Potater Tots, Tequila Habanero Chicken Sausage and their special pretzel. Also noteworthy is the beet salad appetizer which served as a hearty starter, followed by a selection of sausages (small bite style) with three different sauces, including the special homemade ketchup. An unexpected, yet lovely surprise was the Eggplant Sliders—hopefully these will crop up soon as a regular menu item.

The happy hour menu also serves small bites such as Buffalo & Sweet Sriracha Cauliflower and Pastrami Egg Rolls and the dessert of bread pudding was a pretty substantial and a happy ending to my meal.

Beers on offer included Bruery 5 Golden Ring from America- Belgian Strong Ale; Schonramer Gold from Germany-Pilsner; Ommegang Scythe & Sickle from America-Oatmeal Stout, and Ayinger Brau Weifse from Germany.

Each week they spotlight a different brewery, and I was slightly disappointed to only see one English Bitter on the beer menu, that being the Old Golden Hen. All the beers are priced between $6 and $11, and the high end ones deserve special mention. They are the Allagash Curiel and Allagash Yakuza from America, the Triple Karmeliet from Belgium, the Stift Engelszeli Gregorius from Austria and the wonderful Delirium Noel from Belgium.
