An Artful Afternoon

| October 11, 2012

We recently had the pleasure of meeting the incredible winemaker Gerard Bertrand at a fabulous luncheon at DB Bistro Moderne Restaurant located not far from the Museum of Modern Art. This was a perfect venue to meet a man who creates his wine, as an artist creates his masterpiece. He has a uniquely creative approach to wine making that delivers interesting and complex, well balanced wines.

Gerard Bertrand grew up in the wine business and started making wine at the tender age of ten. His years of experience and creative curiosity show through in his wines. He owns seven estates in the prime areas of The Languedoc Region in the South of France and also partners with the best winemakers in the area. Gerard Bertrand wines are synonymous with quality and yet they can still deliver a great value to the consumer.

Gerard often speaks of “the Mediterranean lifestyle” or Art de Vivre, and his headquarters located at Château l’Hospitalet, in La Clape between Narbonne and The Mediterranean is a perfect example of this. A celebrated vineyard in an enchanting location that offer

s so much more: a 38-room four-star luxury hotel with views of the vineyard, a restaurant serving simple dishes and brilliant wine in a modern bistro ambiance. The vineyard is also home to a summer jazz festival with well-known performers, an art gallery and many art and crafts exhibitions.

We tasted several wines that afternoon and some of my favorites were:

Gris Blanc: A Grenache Gris-Grenache Noir is a Rose that brings a natural sweetness to its fruity character with a splendid acidity. This wonderful Rose can be purchased for under $20 and enjoyed all year round as it goes well with spicy dishes and fish.

Reserve Speciale Viognier: Pale yellow in color with just a hint of green, this intensely fragrant wine has delightful flavors of citrus, honey, dried fruits and hazelnut with a lovely finish. Made from 100% Viognier it’s a great accompaniment to fish and shellfish and a fantastic buy for under $15.

Reserve Speciale Chardonnay: A wonderfully balanced 100% Chardonnay, offering both complex and fresh notes of ripe apple, citrus and florals. The barrel aging provides the aromas and flavorsome notes of hazelnut. Serve with risotto, chicken or scallops. Another great buy under $15.

Gerard Betrand has received many prestigious awards including the recent European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

Try some of his wines…the distinctive flavors speak for themselves.
