An Evening with Jehangir Mehta

| November 11, 2012

On one of the first blustery nights of the year, we headed down to TriBeCa to sample some savory delights sprung from the mind of Jehangir MehtaCelebrity Chef Jehangir Mehta. A two-time Next Iron Chef alum and cutting his teeth alongside some of NYC’s finest chefs, Mehta’s prolific creative style and the aptly named Mehtaphor delivered exciting and unexpected surprises.

Housed off of the lobby of the Duane Street Hotel, this urban-hip environment is uniquely designed and has cozy panaches in abundance. The long communal table invites a sense of connectedness and for a hotel restaurant; this environment is anything but corporate.

We started off our meal with the Poprock Oyster (onion confit, grapefruit granite)—a true taste sensation that brought me right back to junior high school—carbonated oysters! Next up was a delectable treat known as the Vegetable Dumpling Chaat. An interesting riff on Indian street food, this is one vegetarian dish that satisfied on every level. Tangy, savory, sweet, crunchy—delicious! Next up was the Blackened Chicken Skewers that were dressed in a tangy tamarind pineapple sauce and cooked to a tender perfection. The pièce de résistance was certainly the Graffiti Burger. Served with chipotle mayo and garlic fries, the seasoning blend and perfectly crispy and soft brioche bun, was extremely memorable.

With a nice selection of dishes including a well endowed vegetarian menu and showstoppers like the Shaved Foie Gras with rasperry compote, The Truffle, Goat Cheese & Crab Pizza and the Chili Fennel Ribeye, there is something sure to tantalize your tastebuds and send you off into the night with fond memories.

But don’t forget, Chef Mehta is rather well known for his prowess as a pastry chef and if the Tres Leches Cake with a coconut cookie is any indication for whatever else lies in wait; your after dinner sugar jones is in good hands.
